Hello,
As I mentioned last Friday, thanks in part to your outreach to Phoenix City Council members, the misguided Prevailing Wage ordinance currently under consideration was dealt a brief setback. However, proponents are not giving up on doing whatever it takes to advance the policy as quickly as possible. It is already back on the Council agenda for this Wednesday, July 1st.
We need you to continue contacting the Mayor and Councilmembers and keep pressure on them to do the right thing. Arizona subcontractors are already dealing with enough at a time when the economy and pandemic have added extra obstacles to keeping businesses strong. However, the most important step you can take right now is to electronically register your official opposition via the City Council’s online comment system.
Please go ASAP to the City Council’s meetings page and follow these instructions to leave your comment in the official records for the meeting:
- Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the list of meetings, agendas, etc.
- Click the comment bubble under the “Request to Speak or Comment Only” column for the 10:00 a.m. July 1st Formal Meeting
- Scroll down and find Item 45 – the item related to the Prevailing Wage issue (you may need to advance to page 2 if the overall agenda is a long one)
- Click “Comment” – DO NOT click “Register to Speak” at this time
- Select “Oppose”
- Type in your comment. Keep it brief and to the point since there is a 500 character limit. Feel free to cut and paste the following sample if you wish…
- My name is [insert name], and I am the [insert title] for [insert business name]. We are a subcontractor who does work in the City of Phoenix. I oppose the proposed Prevailing Wage ordinance. If adopted, this policy will place tremendous compliance burdens on my business, which is already facing challenges in today’s economy. Please oppose the ordinance, and focus the City’s time on more urgent matters.”
- If there is space left after your comment, consider noting that you are an ASA of Arizona member and/or supporter of Arizonans for Fair Contracting. This heightens our profile the next time an important policy conversation arises
Again, thank you for all you have done so far to influence this process for the better. If we keep pressing, we can defeat this burdensome, costly regulation on the construction industry. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions.
Onwards!
Josh Umar
